5 TIPS FOR HEALTHY WINTER HAIR

Winter got you down & dry?

Whether it’s the cold weather or heated indoors, the extremely dry air sucks the moisture out of our skin and hair for weeks on end. On top of this, hats and scarves add stress to your strands. This can lead to our hair becoming brittle, scalps feeling tight and itchy, and our overall look falling flat.

Speaking from experience, we’ve put together 5 simple tips to keep your hair & scalp hydrated, healthy, and happy through the winter weather!

Also, stick around until the end of the blog to hear an exciting announcement from our stylist Ana!

DON’T WASH YOUR HAIR EVERY DAY.

You’ve probably already heard this one from your stylist, but it’s especially important in winter when we run our water steaming hot. Daily showers strip our scalp of it’s natural, necessary oils, making it feel dry and tight.

Try washing your hair every other day, and use a dry shampoo if you feel impatient during the wait. When you do shower, avoid keeping your head directly under the showerhead or put your hair up until you actually shampoo. This reduces the amount of time your hair and scalp sits under hot water

GO NATURAL.

Prevent further damage by avoiding daily heat styling like blow drying and flat ironing, and drying products such as mousse and hairspray. According to Stuart Phillips Holistic Hairdressing, these products can dry both the hair and scalp.

Still need a boost? We suggest products that have hydrating power as well as hold and volume. Try MoroccanOil’s Thickening Lotion or Kenra’s Thermal Styling Spray; both found at Socias. Also, check the temperature setting on your styling tools; you may be unnecessarily cranking them to the highest heat, adding damage. Those with fine hair can still get great results with 350° or less, and those with coarse hair should avoid exceeding 400°.

VISIT THE DARK SIDE.

If you’re blonde and looking dry or a light brown and feeling dull, chat with your stylist about subtly richening your color to add shine and reflect light. We love using a semi-permanent gloss for a seasonal shift as opposed to doing a dramatic transformation. You’ll still feel like yourself and easily be able to go back to a bright shade by spring.

DRINK UP!

This one’s simple as it gets: if you’re dehydrated, you drink water. In winter months, your body, skin, nails, and hair are extra prone to dehydration and need a steady intake of H2O. Studies vary, but 1 liter (8 cups) of water is a generally accepted suggestion. This daily effort is necessary for more important body functions than mere appearances, but having hydrated hair is a pretty great bonus!
